The Information Systems Design Department-ASI
Objectives
The ASI Department has an objective to form engineers with technical capabilities in the informatics , the information processing , and the electronics and physics field . The teaching staff 's objective is to train autonomous engineers capable of team work , having acquired in their department of study a spirit of synthesis and strong sense of responsibilities;
Training
The ASI degree courses are divided into 6 semesters .The first 3 semesters aim at providing students with background knowledge .The 4th and 5th semesters mix half background training with half development of an industrial project at INSA- Rouen ( Collective Integration Project - PIC ) . Projects are led by teams of 6-8 students .The 6th semester is devoted to internships.
Studies are organized in:
- scientific poles :computing (20%) , data and decision (20%) and perception (15%)
- a Human Sciences pole (25%) : foreign languages, management , economics , quality, « project management », sports
- a project pole (20%) . Students work on a study project followed up by an industrial client and are thus confronted with difficulties in the industrial world such as costs , time limits ,organization, standards , quality and environment.
Teaching is based on the information technologies and the communication for education (TICE) with the help of the Department educational internet server teaching aids for courses or projects , discussions )
Students are gradually led to work on concrete educational platforms such as the creation of the Department 's information system , the translation of available documents on « open source » projects or the development of a browsing process within the INSA .Platforms allow the creation of theoritical courses which are - as far as possible – common to several course catalogues from different scientific poles.
During the first 3 semesters , traditional courses are completed by tutorial works in teams of 3 or 4 students allowing a personal follow up. Assets are acquired all along the different projects led by each student.
The PIC is a very important moment during ASI courses . Each project leader is a class student appointed for 6 months .He / she designates his /her team (class students) and acts as an interface between the team and the industrial client . For a semester, he/she leads his/her team with a view to preparing for specification. At the end of the semester ,there is a handover from the old project leader to the new one but the team remains the same. All along the project period , a psychoanalyst follows the different groups making them aware of problems of communication and relationships likely to affect a group. Projects are followed up by a member of the teaching staff who has specialized in the field . Projects are granted money on condition that they are managed properly by the teams. As far as possible , projects cover the main 3 components of the industrial fabric (start-ups, SMEs and big companies ) as well as the 3 scientific poles of the INSA .
This active learning by projects approach enables students to acquire experience in important industrial or R&D projects by following a quality process in keeping with the ISO 9001 :2000 norm.
For further information , see the ASI Department course catalogue.
Industrial internships
2 are obligatory :
- Each student must do an internship ( for 1 to 2 months ) as a technician. The aim is to make them aware of the business world.Summer following semester 6.
- They must also do a studies internship ( for at least 21 weeks) during the 10th semester . The objective is to throw students into an industrial environment and its operational constraints.
Studying in international universities
In order to develop partnerships between universities , the ASI department has adopted a course presentation and validation using the European ECTS credit system. Teachers of the department – associated with the « Service des affaires Internationales » - are ready to help students to build their international course project abroad.
Almost 30% of our ASI students now do part of their studies abroad.
Doctoral studies and research
Students in our department are now granted the permission to follow – at the same time as their last year - a research formation thanks to our Master of Science and Technology / Information and Systems Engineering with a Computing Engineering specialty .
Students are allowed to follow their ASI courses by working on a doctoral thesis. Teachers and researchers of our department are joined to the LITIS - « Laboratoire d'Informatique , Traitement de l' Information et des Systemes ( EA 4051 , joint INSA-Rouen and Rouen and Le Havre Universities ).
Career openings
ASI graduates are trained to deal with all aspects of information systems : design, development , integration , implementation , security , support ....They are recruited by providers , users, as well as by consultancy firms seeking new project leaders .
