First and second years in the STPI department
Missions:
- To give each student a solid background in terms of skills , techniques and oral and written communication
- To change freshly integrated secondary education students into future responsible autonomous student engineers
- Being firmly internationally-oriented , these first udergraduate years also aim at preparing students for a greater professional mobility
- At the end of these years, students must have gained knowledge in scientific language and working methods allowing them :
*To follow as efficiently as possible the courses in any INSA engineering optional section,
*To possibly reorient their career .
Training
Each school year is organized into 2 semesters lasting 16 weeks . The 1st year is a probationary year and it is exceptional for the jury to grant permission to retake the 1st year. The juries may only grant such permission if they consider that there is a valid social or medical condition to account for a student 's poor academic results.
The second year is when students are advised what courses to follow , preparing them to choose their Engineering Department.
At the end of the 3rd semester , students choose their pre-specialization.Then, during the 4th semester , they attend scientific and social sciences courses or courses linked to their thematic field.
Teaching
In each subject, teaching
is organized in course units corresponding to volumes of supervised courses and
personal work which are approximately
the same ( there are also half course units corresponding to half the volumes
indicated above ).
Courses take place in
lecture halls in the presence of half a class . The TD study sections are
organized into groups of 24 students .TP study sections and some other
language or communication TD classes
are organized into groups of 15 students. Some remedial TD courses are also
organized into groups of 6 students. Students are asked to work regularly and
are subject to continuous assessment (2 exercises per UV and 2 TD marks ).
To help students to choose their special field of study , meetings are organized in the presence of the directors of departments. One special day event based on the Engineering jobs is also planned to allow contact between our students and engineers .
Training schemes for students
Training schemes are mandatory at the end of the 1st year. At students' request ,the jury members may grant them a second scheme at the end of the 2rd year.
About evaluation and the juries
Each course catalogue or half course catalogue responsible teacher sets the methods and dates of assessments in agreement with the STPI director and informs students on this at the beginning of the semester. The jury members are composed of course catalogue or half course catalogue responsible teachers. The jury members are appointed by the INSA Direction on the proposal of the STPI department director for a school year. They are allowed to meet as many times as needed. On the basis of the responsible teachers' proposals, the jury members give each student a given number of ECTS credits and marks for each course catalogue that enable them to grade year students in order of merit. At the end of each semester school results are sent to each student (or to his/her parents if he/she is under 18 ). Evaluations have for objective to help students assess their competences , the knowledge they have acquired and to point out possible weaknesses. The principle of moving up to the next class is to hold 60 ECTS credits at the end of the first year and 120 ECTS credits at the end of the first 2 years. Some school adjustments may be proposed to the jury by the STPI director ,especially for some optional minors:
Top athletes sports
Top- level athletes listed by the Ministry of Sports can be admitted into INSA-Rouen. For this group of students , timetables and teaching methods are adapted to their needs so they can combine practising their sports and studying towards their engineering diplomas (in agreement with the STPI Department Director )
Music +studies
Thanks to the music +studies optional minor , students who are also experienced musicians are able to continue to practise their individual or group activities alongside their engineering studies .Admission to this optional minor is granted to any student proving that they have studied music , practised an instrument or been a member of a choir for at least 5 years.
Visual arts + studies / Theatre+ studies
Right from the 1st year , these 2 sections are open to students wishing to complement their scientific knowledge with cultural and artistic practice.
First and second years studies abroad
After being authorized by the jury to do so , INSA students can possibly follow their 1st and 2nd years in a foreign school.
