Following the success of the SIA 2006 congress centred on this reality and entitled: «The Diesel engine: The low CO2 and emissions reduction challenge», this new meeting will be the occasion to understand the current situation and present the latest developments as well as quantum-lead innovations that will contribute to advancing the Diesel engine even further in the challenge to simultaneously reduce emissions of both greenhouse gases and pollutants. This progress also requires taking into account the increasing constraints imposed by customers in terms of cost, acoustic and thermal comfort, and vehicle performance.
Global warming related to increasing quantities of greenhouse gases, in particular CO2,
is now a universal issue that must be faced by the industrial world.
Every engineer and scientist must become involved in the search for new
solutions. The stakes for future generations are enormous and the
sector of transport and thus of the automobile are directly concerned.
By continuing
to lower fuel consumption and having overcome its main faults of the
past, the Diesel engine is considered in Europe as one of the low CO2
emitting converters of the future. North America, Japan and emerging
nations are now starting to express interest. There are increasingly
more stringent requirements concerning regulations and goals announced
by certain countries to reduce by 4 their CO2 emissions by
2050. This represents new complex technological challenges that are
exciting for the community of engineers and scientists involved in the
development of Diesel engines that are increasingly more
environment-friendly.

To face these
considerable environmental and economic stakes, France has recently
created Competition Poles devoted to transports. In this respect, the
Basse Normandie, Haute Normandie and Ile de France Regions are
consolidating the major leading talents in research and development on
Diesel engines and powertrains for automobile applications. This is
being done within the competitiveness cluster Mov’eo and via its
"Energy & Environment" Strategic Activity Domain. In order to
encourage the dynamics that has been created around this initiative,
the SIA is providing clusters with its know-how in terms of circulation
of scientific knowledge and for this has decided to organise the 2008
meeting of its traditional Diesel congress in Rouen, headquarters of
the cluster Mov'eo.
This
International Conference will be an exceptional opportunity for experts
in the automobile, truck and industrial vehicle industries, those of
equipment suppliers, the petroleum industry, research laboratories and
universities to exchange their points of view and information on
progress in Diesel power to respond to the technological challenges of
the future.
