ECIU at INSA Rouen Normandie

INSA Rouen Normandie, along with the INSA group, is a member of the European Alliance ECIU University, an initiative supported by the European Commission, bringing together 13 European higher education institutions. Its members develop a multidisciplinary approach through challenges on societal issues for teaching (challenge based learning, CBL) and for research (challenge based research, CBR). This represents a fantastic opportunity to participate in ECIU challenges and other activities related to pedagogical innovation, open and participatory science, co-construction of innovation, and mobility for staff and students. This also allows researchers to integrate a European collaboration network.

By focusing on challenges through an innovative approach to teaching and research, ECIU University positions innovation and social progress at the center of its actions. INSA Rouen Normandie's commitment within ECIU University demonstrates its willingness to rethink education, research, and innovation to actively contribute to building a sustainable and resilient future.

ECIU UNIVERSITY, EUROPEAN CONSORTIUM OF INNOVATIVE UNIVERSITIES

The European Consortium of Innovative Universities is an alliance of 13 higher education institutions from the European Union, including the INSA Group, which places innovation and social progress at the center of their objectives. Winner in 2019 of the European Commission's "European Alliances" call for proposals, ECIU University stands out with an innovative approach focused on challenges, both in education and in research and innovation. This approach aims to closely integrate academic domains to better address societal challenges, particularly in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 11.

ECIU CHALLENGES AND MICROMODULES, AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

The Challenge Based Learning (CBL) provide students with the opportunity to work on real and concrete issues related to UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, in multidisciplinary teams composed of students from ECIU's European partner universities.

These challenges are organised in cooperation with partners such as local authorities, industrial players, companies, etc. Thus, it is a chance for students to develop their professional network in addition to having a real impact on existing sustainable development issues. Challenges are proposed by the 13 member institutions of ECIU University throughout the year, in a hybrid format (combining online and face-to-face sessions). They offer students involved the opportunity to travel across Europe to meet team members. INSA Rouen students can also take micromodules of training.
The catalog of challenges and micromodules open for applications can be found on the unique ECIU platform:  https://engage.eciu.eu/

ECIU COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

ECIU University is a great European network of researchers, with the objective to promote the participation of  researchers and teacher-researchers European research programs linked with the Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Resilient local communities). ECIU University has 5 specific goals in that sense :

  • Energy and Sustainability
  • Circular Economy
  • Transport and Mobility
  • Resilient Communities
  • Citizen Science

The network offers collaboration opportunities with all its members to push the boundaries of science in service of society. Different types of research collaborations can be conducted, with one or more ECIU partners, for example:

  • Collaborative projects under Horizon Europe
  • Collaborative projects Interreg Europe, North Sea, Northwest, Atlantic Area
  • Bilateral collaborative projects ANR - PRCI (International Collaborative Research Projects): example France / Germany
  • Joint theses
  • Research mobility projects Hubert Curien Partnerships (PHC)
  • Guest researcher months: 1 month of availability and outgoing or incoming mobility (INSA Rouen Normandie)

Numbers

  • 27,000 academic research staf

  • 500 research units

  • 4,500 researchers

Research in ECIU University is composed by :

  • Research & Innovation Hub (virtual researchers community)
  • SEED Programmes to develop research projects
  • SMART-ER

    The SMART-ER Project

ECIU University led an ambitious research project, SMART European Regions (SMART-ER). The objective of this project (2021-2024) was to develop a Virtual Research Institute to foster links between teacher-researchers from member universities and collaboration with other actors in society at regional and European levels. Concurrently, institutions piloted capacity-building programs (Seed Program: collaborative research collaboration seed projects and SMART-ER Academy: training for researchers) and citizen science initiatives that will serve as a testbed to put into practice all the mechanisms and structures built.

PROMOTING TRAINING AND THE EXCHANGE OF BEST PRACTICES AMONG STAFF MEMBERS

To capitalize on the diversity of universities that make up ECIU, the alliance aims to encourage the sharing of best practices among them by facilitating the mobility of their staff, including researchers, across Europe. Thus, all staff at INSA Rouen Normandie have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the environment of their European counterparts to benefit from their expertise and culture, within the framework of the Job Shadowing concept
